Symptoms, scope, repair vs replace and what to expect

Most toilet problems start small. A whoosh you hear at night, a rocking pan, a tiny patch of water at the back of the bowl.

If you would rather skip the diagnosis and book in, give us a call and we will sort the rest. If the issue is a blockage that will not clear, our blocked toilet plumber service is the right place to start.

Signs your toilet needs attention

If you are seeing or hearing any of these, give us a call:

  • A constantly running cistern or “ghost flushing” sound.
  • A flush button that sticks, weak flushes or a toilet that will not flush at all.
  • A cistern that fills slowly or never stops filling.
  • Water pooling on the floor, dampness around the base, or a wobbly toilet that moves when you sit down.
  • Cracks in the bowl or cistern.
  • A sewer smell around the toilet.
  • Gurgling or bubbling sounds when flushing.
  • A blocked or overflowing bowl.

Even small symptoms tend to get worse over time, so it is usually cheaper to address them early.

What we work on

Our Gold Coast toilet repair plumbers handle cistern repairs, including standard cisterns and in-wall or concealed cisterns, flush button and dual-flush mechanism repair or replacement, inlet and outlet valves, flappers and seating washers, isolation tap replacement, and more.

We carry a range of brand specific and generic toilet parts on the truck, so most repairs can be completed in the same visit.

If you are tackling a wider bathroom refresh, our shower repair service often pairs well with a toilet upgrade.

Repair versus replace

A repair usually makes sense when the fault is isolated, such as a worn flapper, a faulty fill or flush valve, or a minor leak from a connection.

Replacement is usually the smarter call when the bowl or cistern is cracked, the toilet is roughly 10 to 15 years old, the pan keeps blocking, or the unit is wasting noticeable amounts of water.

We will give you a straight read on which option is the better long-term spend, without pushing you toward a new toilet you do not need.

For a guided overview of how we run jobs from booking to clean-up, read our process.

The hidden cost of doing nothing

A toilet that runs even slightly can quietly waste litres an hour, every hour, until the bill arrives. A slow leak around the base or behind a concealed cistern is worse, because the water often soaks into flooring, joinery or the subfloor before anyone notices.

In our experience, small toilet faults rarely fix themselves, and the longer they are left, the more likely they turn into a bigger repair. Acting early usually saves money and avoids surprise damage.

How we work

The process is straightforward.

  1. Step one: a quick call so we understand the symptom, the toilet type and how urgent it is.
  2. Step two: attendance on a booked time, on-site diagnosis, and an upfront price before any work begins.
  3. Step three: the repair, replacement or installation, followed by a flush test and a tidy-up before we leave.

If your toilet is leaking now and you need to stop the water before we arrive, our guide on how to turn the water off to your toilet walks you through it.

What affects cost, and when DIY is not the right call

Cost typically depends on the type of fault (mechanism vs leak vs blockage vs full replacement), the brand and parts of the toilet, whether the cistern is in-wall or standard, accessibility, and whether the visit is after-hours.

As for DIY, basic valve swaps can be a homeowner job, but a leaking pan collar, a cracked bowl or cistern, repeat blockages, or anything affecting more than one fixture should be left to a licensed plumber. Those usually point to deeper issues that are not solved at the toilet itself.

Toilet Repair FAQs

A toilet that keeps running is usually a worn or failing inlet or outlet valve, a faulty flush mechanism, or a flapper or seating washer that is no longer sealing properly. The fix is normally a part swap, and we carry the most common parts on the truck so it can usually be sorted in the same visit. For background reading, see our guide on how to fix a leaking toilet or cistern.

A weak flush, a stuck flush button or a toilet that will not flush at all is most often caused by a worn flush valve, a sticking dual-flush mechanism or a button that has deteriorated. Sometimes a low water level in the cistern from a faulty inlet valve is the culprit. We diagnose it on site and explain whether a repair or a mechanism replacement is the right move.

Water at the base usually points to a worn pan collar (the rubber seal between the toilet and the sewer pipe), a deteriorated wax seal or cone rubber, a leaking isolation tap, or a cracked bowl. If you also notice a sewer smell, the pan collar is a very common culprit. This kind of leak should be handled by a licensed plumber to avoid sewage exposure and to make sure the seal is reinstalled correctly.

If a plunger has not cleared it, the blockage is likely deeper in the line and may not be at the toilet itself. Repeated DIY attempts can push the blockage further or cause a messy overflow. A blocked toilet plumber visit can clear it properly, and if a CCTV inspection is needed to confirm the cause, we can organise that too.

A repair usually makes sense when the fault is isolated, such as a faulty valve or worn seal. Replacement is usually smarter if the bowl or cistern is cracked, the toilet is roughly 10 to 15 years old, the pan keeps blocking, or the unit is wasting noticeable amounts of water. We give you a straight recommendation based on the condition of the unit, not a push toward a new suite.

Cost depends on the type of fault, the brand and parts of the toilet, whether the cistern is in-wall or standard, accessibility, and whether the visit is after-hours.

Most straightforward repairs, such as valve replacements or flush mechanism swaps, can be completed in a single visit. A full toilet replacement usually takes longer because the old unit must be disconnected, removed, and the new suite installed and tested. We give you a realistic time on the call once we know the issue.

Yes. If your existing unit is older or wasting water, an upgrade to a modern dual-flush water-efficient suite usually pays back through lower water bills over time. We can supply and install a new suite, or fit one you have already purchased.

Yes. We work on standard, in-wall and concealed cisterns. These setups can need extra care because the cistern is not visible, but the underlying repairs (valves, mechanisms, seals) are usually similar to a standard toilet.
