Whether you need hot water installation, detailed advice around hot water system installation, a like-for-like swap, or guidance on the right setup for your household, we keep the process practical and straightforward.
We work across electric and gas systems, storage tanks, continuous flow units, and modern options such as heat pumps, with servicing and fault finding that helps you avoid bigger problems and higher running costs.
If you already know what you need, we can help with hot water system repairs, hot water system replacements, or a booked hot water system service. If you are still weighing up your options, the guide below will help you work out what is going on and what usually makes the most sense.
No hot water is the obvious one, but many systems give warning signs before they fail completely. Watch for fluctuating water temperature, a leaking tank or valves, rumbling or banging noises, discoloured water, low hot water pressure, or bills that seem to be climbing for no clear reason. If your hot water is going cold too quickly or your overflow pipe is constantly discharging, it is worth getting it checked before a small issue becomes a bigger one.
Hot water faults can come from worn or failing parts, sediment build-up inside the tank, tempering valve problems, pressure relief valve issues, ageing tank corrosion, or ignition and pilot faults on gas units. On some electric systems, the thermostat or heating element may be the problem, and these parts may require the right qualified trade to replace safely. The key is diagnosing the real cause properly before spending money on the wrong fix.
A repair is often the right move when the unit is otherwise in good condition and the issue is isolated to a valve, control, or another serviceable part. Replacement usually becomes the better option when the tank is older, showing signs of corrosion, leaking from the cylinder itself, breaking down repeatedly, or costing too much to keep running. If safety, compliance, or efficiency is part of the problem, upgrading can be the more practical long-term decision.
Electric storage systems are common and can suit many homes, while electric instantaneous units can work where space is tight and demand is lower. Gas storage and continuous flow systems can suit households wanting strong recovery and consistent supply. Solar and heat pump systems may appeal if efficiency and running costs are front of mind. The best option usually comes down to household size, daily usage, available services, budget, and how important energy efficiency is to you.
DCM Plumbing handles hot water installs, repairs, replacements and servicing across the Gold Coast. We commonly deal with tempering valves, pressure relief valves, leaking connections, corrosion issues, and general performance faults, and we can coordinate compliant replacements when a full change-out is the better option. When new systems are installed, we handle the plumbing compliance requirements needed to bring the job up to current standards. You can also learn more about how we work on our our process page.
Regular servicing can help spot wear early, improve efficiency, and reduce the risk of waking up to no hot water. It can also help identify issues such as faulty valves, sediment build-up and small leaks before they shorten the life of the unit. If your system is ageing, inefficient, or struggling to keep up, replacing it may lower running costs over time. Common signs include no hot water, water that turns hot then cold, leaks around the tank or valves, strange noises, rusty or discoloured water, low pressure, and rising energy bills. These symptoms can point to anything from a faulty valve to sediment build-up or tank deterioration.
The cause depends on the type of system. It may be a tempering valve issue, a pressure relief problem, sediment inside the tank, a gas ignition fault, or on some electric systems, a thermostat or heating element issue. Proper diagnosis matters, because different faults call for very different fixes.
Some discharge can happen as pressure changes, but constant dripping, hot water discharge, or obvious leaking from the unit should not be ignored. A plumber can check whether it is a valve issue, excess pressure, expansion-related discharge, or a sign the system is wearing out.
If the problem is isolated and the system is otherwise in good shape, repair is often worthwhile. If the unit is older, leaking from the tank, corroded, inefficient, or breaking down often, replacement is usually the smarter spend. We can talk you through the practical pros and cons based on the condition of your current unit.
Electric systems are common and can suit many homes, while gas systems can offer strong recovery and continuous flow options for households with higher demand. The right choice depends on your property, existing connections, household size, usage patterns, and budget.
Cost can vary based on the type and size of the unit, whether you are changing system type, access to the installation area, plumbing upgrades needed for compliance, and the condition of the existing setup. We provide upfront pricing so you know what is involved before work starts.
That depends on the fault, the system type, and whether parts are needed or a full replacement is required. Many jobs are straightforward once the issue is diagnosed, but compliance upgrades or changing system type can add time. We will explain the likely scope before work begins.
Regular servicing helps identify wear early and keep the system operating efficiently. We recommend that hot water systems should generally be serviced every 1 to 2 years, with major servicing recommended at longer intervals depending on the unit and manufacturer guidance.
If the unit is leaking, turn off the isolation valve if it is safe to do so and avoid using the system until it has been checked. If you have no hot water and need urgent help, call DCM Plumbing to arrange the next available attendance, especially if the issue is affecting the whole household or creating a safety risk.
If it’s a larger hot water unit over 300lt and wired up to the T33 electricity tariff then these can be fairly economical on power bills but if it’s a smaller unit on the T31 tariff then they can be costly in energy consumption charges. The down side for these hot water units is once the hot water has been emptied from the tank, at least 20-30 minutes is required before there will be any more hot water to use.
Gas hot water units are most economical when connected to the natural gas supply by a professional gas fitter. This isn’t a possibility for many homes on the Gold Coast as natural gas hasn’t been piped to their streets. Instantaneous gas hot water units are great for people who use a lot of hot water as you can never run out as it simply heats the water each time it’s called for.
Connecting these hot water systems to bottled (LPG) gas is less economical. There are strict regulations regarding how and where these hot water systems can be installed to maximise safety. Your Gold Coast home would need good water pressure as low water pressure wouldn’t allow the water to be heated correctly. If you are interested in installing a new gas hot water system, talk to us about the suitability for your home. We are licensed gas engineers as well as hot water system installation Gold Coast experts.
Heat pumps use up to 75% less power than a standard electric hot water unit and so can be economical and energy efficient. In our experience the higher initial costs, maintenance costs and shorter lifespan of this type of unit don’t make this a very attractive choice.
Roof mounted solar hot water systems are likely to be the most economical option long term if the electricity for the booster is coming from the T33 tariff. If you’re planning on staying in your home for over 7 years, can afford the initial extra outlay, then the overall reduced energy bills are likely to make this the best choice. The biggest drawback with these units is if all the hot water is used up and if the sun isn’t out heating it up more hot water sufficiently, it may be necessary to wait until the next morning before there’s more hot water once the booster switch has come on overnight.
With a combination of sophisticated diagnostic testing and competitively-priced servicing options, we will install, repair and maintain your Gold Coast hot water system with minimal disruption to your household.
